Life Coaching: Your New Career?

Ever since I was a teenager my friends and family came to me to vent their problems. I never knew exactly why they were drawn to me; I didn’t have particularly good advice to give or much life experience.

Then I realized that all I was doing was listening to them. That’s all they really needed at the time, someone to air out their frustrations to.

Later on, I found out that some people actually do that as a career. Sure, there are psychiatrists available to consult, but what about for simpler things like getting your stuff organized or deciding what college to go to? Those aren’t exactly things you’d bring to your therapists, but they are problems you can bring up with a life coach.

A life coach is a friend, personal trainer, cheerleader, shoulder to lean on, business adviser, and favorite aunt all rolled into one. They can be someone you go to because you don’t know what your next step should be. Most people have a gap between them and their happiness. Life coaches help them bridge that gap so that they can reach their happiness.

Personal development is important for each and every one of us. We need to grow and move towards goals so that we don’t become stale and tired of life. Life coaches guide people through tough times like finding the right job, loss of motivation, low self-confidence. They may seem like a miracle worker but really what they do is vital for some people, so that they can become their best selves and put something valuable on their resumes.

The great thing about being a life coach is that anyone can do it. You just need certain characteristics to start a successful life coach career.

1. Do you like working with people?
2. Do you easily empathize with people and their troubles?
3. Are you open-minded and non-judgmental?
4. Are you a good listener?
5. Are you trustworthy and keep your promises?
6. Are you able to dole out tough love?
7. Can you be honest and direct with people?
8. Are you patient?
9. Do you have an enthusiastic attitude?
10. Do you have your life in order?

You need to have all these things before you can even consider becoming a life coach. The last question is most important because if you yourself are not in control of your life how can you advise others to do the same? Check out also this interview with Sara Clapper.

If you don’t have all of the above just yet, don’t worry! You can work on those things. That’s the beauty of personal development. Everyone has the potential to be a life coach. They just need the proper training.
